Modern European culture stands on three pillars: Christianity, national memory, and Antiquity. While the first two have undergone many changes that have shaken their significance, the ancient heritage remains the foundation of the European world to this day. We use ancient names and titles, political structures and legal formulas, calendars, philosophical concepts, architectural principles, poetic meters, and genres. In this lecture, we will explore what we mean by Antiquity, walk through the main historical periods, and try to understand why it has remained with us longer than any other historical period.
